Littleover, Diabolical, Oasis Star rank among the best
Littleover, Diabolical and Oasis Star are easily the best of the host of classic winners bred at Manjri Stud Farm. The stud farm has bred other Derby winners as well in recent times like Secret Memory, Ray of Light, Crack Regiment and Aperitivo but the three horses mentioned stand out in the crowded list of achievers if only because of their fantastic achievements. Littleover and Diabolical are dual Derby winners while Oasis Star was a sprinting sensation, proving her invincibility over a sprint, and wining the Gr 1 Sprinters Cup twice in succession She also narrowly failed to win a race during the Dubai Racing Carnival. Littleover won the competitive Gr 1 Kingfisher Bangalore Derby; she bettered that performance by going on to win the most coveted Derby of Indian racing calendar namely the Gr 1 Indian Derby. Diabolical's achievement too was creditable as this multi-classic winner won the Gr 1 Golconda Derby and within a week, ran in the Indian Derby and won in fine fashion. These horses no doubt are jewels of the stud farm which emerged from the stud farm after it came under the wings of Shapoor Mistry in the mid 80's.
Littleover is by Bolder Than Bold whose career as a stallion was cut short because of his premature death. Bolder Than Bold could surely have boosted the stud farm significantly because in his first crop itself he had Littleover. Littleover was an amazing filly who had class written all over her. Originally trained by S Padmanabhan under whom she won twice, the filly moved to Rashid Byramji after owner Rajan Bajaj sold it to Dr Vijay Mallya. Littleover won the Bangalore Derby in a gutsy fashion and though she was far from her best in the Indian Oaks, she recovered well enough to win the Indian Derby at the expense of Super Brave.
The son of Major Impact, Diabolical chartered an exciting career, winning a host of graded races. Though he played second fiddle to stablemate Haunting Memories in the early part of his career, he came into his own at Mysore where he won the Mysore Million and the Gr 3 Mysore 2000 Guineas. He also won the Colts Trial Stakes at Hyderabad but was not run in the Derby during the monsoon season because his connections felt that he may not stay the extended trip. However, he proved everyone wrong when he won the Golconda Derby with an end to end mission which earned him a ticket for the glamorous Indian Derby. He accomplished the mission in identical fashion, winning the hard way, by staying upfront and then giving no chance to the celebrated Southern Empire to catch up with him.
Secret Memory was another in recent times to distinguish himself by some splendid performances. He won the Gr 1 Nanoli Stud Pune Derby in record timing and then went on to win the Gr 2 Bangalore 2000 Guineas but lost by a whisker in the Gr 1 Bangalore Winter Derby. However, he won the Gr 1 Super Mile in record time at Kolkata. Secret Memory was by Diffident.
Aperitivo who was another progeny of Diffident, was easily one of the most consistent performers over long distance races in India, in recent times. Winner of the Gr 1 Calcutta Derby Stakes, Aperitivo had the distinction of winning the Stayers Cup back to back apart. The strong point of Aperitivo was the fact that despite racing against top quality races, his career was an extended one.
Crack Regiment won the Gr 1 Golconda Derby and lost by a whisker in the Gr 1 Stayers Cup. The son of Classic Tale was trained by S Padmanabhan who got the modest performer into a classic winner by reposing confidence in the abilities of Crack Regiment who won the Derby during the Asian Racing Conference week in India.
Ray of Light (Portroe) won the Gr 1 PuneIndian Derby and did exceedingly well in the Gr 1 Indian Derby where she gave a scare to Triple Crown winner Smart Chieftain. Ray of Light provided jockey Prakash the taste of Derby success so early in his career and the jockey has gone on to win more than 100 classics thus far.
Oasis Star from the stud farm's latest stallion Senure, proved her great sprinting qualities by winning the top sprint races in India. Oasis Star ranks as the best sprinter that India has seen
